United States – An adult in Bellevue, Seattle, and Woodinville has had a confirmed case of measles, implying an outbreak in Seattle & King County. The individual, infected between June 27 and July 2, may have transmitted the virus to other people in this period. Public Health-Seattle & King County’s Dr. Eric Chow highlighted the high transmissibility stating that measles transmission can occur from an infected person who was in the same room.
Rise in measles cases seen in entire world
Dr. Chow discussed the increased measles cases globally and in the United States, stressing on the importance of vaccination and updating it if required. This is especially true of travelers to avoid spreading the diseases to other regions. The affected person had traveled abroad few weeks ago and this pointed the need for immunization, as reported by The Seattle Times.

Effectiveness of Measles Vaccination
Measles vaccinations, particularly the MMR shots, are highly effective, providing about 97% immunity with two doses, according to Dr. Chow. The immunity from these shots is long-lasting. Measles can be transmitted through respiratory droplets that linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves.
Actions If Exposed
Individuals potentially exposed should verify their vaccination status or check if they have previously had measles. Anyone developing a fever or rash without a known cause should seek medical attention immediately. Dr. Chow advised notifying clinics or hospitals before visiting to prevent further spread. Post-exposure vaccination or medication can help prevent the disease.
Severity and Symptoms of Measles
Disease measles is dangerous and may lead to death, and it is caused by a virus. Common symptoms of the infection include fever, rash, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Possible side effects may involve inflammation of the ear, upset stomach and diarrhea, lung infection, and swelling of the brain. High-risk persons are children below the age of five, people aged twenty years and above, pregnant women, and those who have supressed immune systems, as reported by The Seattle Times.
Vaccination Rates and Public Health
The year’s first measles case in King County was identified in a resident in another month. One of the infected children had not taken the MMR jab and was internationally exposed. Although overall risk is low in the Southeast region, vaccination in kindergarteners has reduced post the pandemic. However, only 92% of them were vaccinated at least once in the 2023-24 academic year while some other schools had as low as 36% vaccination cover.
