United States – New research studies have revealed severe dangers linked to gummies that have been used in the market as smart drugs. These harmless appearing dietary supplements aimed to enhance brain activity have been identified to include concealed and perhaps dangerous elements. Included in the list are psilocybin and psilocin, two substances found in so-called ‘magic’ mushrooms which have hallucinogenic properties, as reported by HealthDay.

Unexpected Findings in Virginia

New research unveiled by doctors from the University of Virginia has found that five people – one of whom was a child – suffered some form of health issue after using these smart enhancement gummies. Analysis of gummies bought from five different brands belonging to gas stations and smoke shops in central Virginia revealed that three of them contained either psilocybin or psilocin. These are both Schedule I drugs according to the FDA, meaning that it is troublesome for them to be present in these products.

This inquiry also highlighted the existence of other undisclosed ingredients including caffeine, ephedrine, as well as kratom in these gummies. Based on the opioid receptors, kratom is an herb that produces addiction. Those substances were not declared, even though their presence was advertised by big marketing slogans and bright labels, this was dangerous for people’s health

Misconceptions About Legal Products

Dr. Avery Michienzi, assistant medical director at UVA’s Blue Ridge Poison Center, highlights a critical misconception: consumers often equate ‘legal’ with ‘safe’. This assumption can be dangerous, as these products are not properly regulated and can contain a variety of undisclosed substances. The lack of accurate information and proper management of these products underscores the potential risks they pose to health.

Cases of Illness and Treatment

Among the individuals affected, three adults intentionally consumed the gummies, believing them to be safe cognitive enhancers. In contrast, a child accidentally ingested two of these gummies, leading to a more severe reaction. While all affected individuals received medical treatment, the child required hospitalization for overnight observation due to the severity of the symptoms.

The Importance of Accurate Labeling

Such calls are likely to be made by researchers who wish to see higher levels of disclosure and precision in labeling of such products. Some packages contain barcodes stating that they have undergone testing and are solely made from the listed components. However, such codes have been found to be distorted, which means that they are also giving the consumers inaccurate information regarding the contents of the foods and drinks they are taking, as reported by HealthDay.

Health Risks and Hospital Testing

The symptoms associated with consuming these tainted gummies can range from hallucinations and increased heart rate to stomach upsets and significant changes in mental state. Notably, these ingredients are not typically included in standard hospital drug tests, which can complicate the diagnosis and treatment of those affected.
